Lyndon Baines Johnson

Lyndon Baines Johnson (LBJ) graduated from Johnson City (Texas) High School in 1924. He was the senior class president. He went on to a long career in the House and the Senate before being elected Vice President in 1960.

Johnson became president of the United States after John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. The following year he ran for re-election as a peace candidate against Sen. Barry Goldwater - a contest he won in a landslide. But behind the scenes he was laying the groundwork for an escalation in Vietnam. The war took its toll on LBJ and on March 31, 1968 he announced to a stunned television audience that he would not run again. He died at his Texas in 1973 ranch of a heart attack.
